IGU is a member of three major international councils – the International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and the International Council for the Humanities and Philosophical Sciences (CIPSH).  At an extraordinary General Assembly held in Oslo, Norway, on 24th October, both ICSU and ISSC delegates voted to pursue a full merger in order to ‘enable and advance science for the future’.  Following this decision it is resolved by both organisations to develop a joint strategy document, while a task force will look into the administrative issues and procedures necessary to formalise the merger – expected to take off with effect 2018 onwards.  The IGU supports and welcomes the initiative and hopes that the vision and mission of the new organisation – as yet to be formally named- will indeed enhance its own goals.  IGU stands ready to participate fully in the planning and implementation of a new merged umbrella organisation that will meet head-on the major and often highly complex prevailing challenges.
