The International Geographical Union regrets to announce that former IGU Vice-President María Teresa Gutiérrez Vázquez died on 6 th September 2017. Professor Gutiérrez Vázquez was a full-time researcher and Professor at the Institute of Geography of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), of which she was its Director twice, from 1971 to 1977 and from 1983 to 1989. During her administration she promoted and coordinated the publication of the National Atlas of Mexico. From 1992 to 1994 she was coordinator of the Geosciences section of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and honorary member of the Mexican Culture Seminar.
Maria Teresa shifted the approach of the demographic studies that were carried out at that time in Mexico towards a population geography perspective that included human and physical factors, allowing the understanding of the evolution of the population in an integral way.
She was Vice-President of the International Geographical Union from 1984 to 1992, being the first Mexican Geographer member of its Executive Committee. She was a corresponding honorary member of the Royal Geographical Society of London since 1980 and an honorary member of the Société de Geographie de Paris since 1983.
Among several awards, she was appointed Laureat d’Honneur by the International Geographical Union, delivered during the XXX International Geographical Congress in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2004 and Doctor Honoris Causa by the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 2011.
