Breaking news from the Kyoto Local Organising Committee:

Extension of Deadline for Abstraction Submission

From October 10 last year, we started to receive abstract submissions for IGU Kyoto Regional Conference (KRC), which will be held August 4-Â?9. As you know, the original deadline for submission (January 15, 2013) is drawing near.

Unfortunately, however, the number of submissions received so far is fewer than we had expected. Moreover, we have received requests to extend this deadline from several IGU Commissions, since many geographers at universities worldwide, including graduate/postgraduate students, are now very busy during the beginning period of the new spring semester.

Accordingly, the Organizing Committee of KRC has just decided to extend the deadline from January 15 to FEBRUARY 4 (Monday). We would appreciate it if you could kindly distribute this information widely among your colleagues, graduate/postgraduate students, and friends.

Please note that, in relation to this, the application deadline for grants for young researchers, provided by KRC, is also extended to February 4.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Kyoto this summer.

The International Geographical Union (IGU) has also announced the availability of travel grants to help defray the costs of participation in the 4 – 9 August 2013 Regional Conference in Kyoto, Japan. A total of up to $25,000 may be awarded competitively to suitable applicants.  Please note that, due to limited availability of funds, the IGU Travel Grants provide only a partial contribution to registration, transport and accommodation.

In selecting applicants to receive awards, preference will be given to young (or emerging) scholars and, in particular to those from developing countries. Because the funds available for this awards program are extremely limited, all applicants will be required to find the balance of the costs of participation; applications for 100% support cannot be funded. Applicants must register for and submit an abstract to the conference organizers in the approved manner.  Although not a strict requirement, a letter of endorsement from the chair of an IGU Commission or Task Force or from the chair of the applicant’s National Committee for the IGU will be helpful in documenting the applicant’s contributions to the congress. Contact details of these individuals are available on the IGU website www.igu-online.org Applications must be accompanied by proof of registration and payment, of appropriate registration fee, the abstract and any endorsement letters; all documents must be submitted directly to the IGU Secretariat.  Download the application form here: Kyoto Travel Grant Application Form English

Completed applications (including endorsement letters) are due at the IGU Secretariat no later than 28th February 2013 (note new date). Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their requests on or about 10 April 2013. Awards will be paid to successful applicants in cash on site in Kyoto in US$ dollars.
