DSCN1415More than 1400 Geographers arrived today to register at the IGU Regional Conference.  The venue for the Opening Ceremony was the Auditorium Maximum of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.  The University is the oldest in Poland (and one of the oldest in Europe) and this year celebrates its 650th anniversary.  There were a number of welcome speeches at the conference, including from the Mayor Krakow and there was a message from the President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski.  Professor Leszek Kosinski presented the keynote address on the ‘Relevance of Geography’  Professor Kosinski is one of Poland’s most distinguished Geographers and gave us inspiring personal insights to the reasons why we should be proud of our discipline which has so much to offer a world beset by environmental, socio-economic and political problems.  Seen here at the ceremony is Professor Marek Degorski, Chairperson of the Steering Committee of the Krakow IGU Regional Conference.
