Tribute from the IGU: Senior Research Scientist Eric DENIS
It is with great sadness that the International Geographical Union learned of the passing of Eric DENIS, Senior Research Scientist at CNRS. Eric DENIS made a remarkable contribution to the promotion of geographical research.
A recognised specialist in urbanisation in regions such as India, Egypt, and Sudan and more broadly in the Global South, his work highlights the social and spatial transformations as well as the inequalities, found in large urban areas. He has studied in particular the process of land commodification and the conversion of land to residential use, paying special attention to the phenomenon of subordinate urbanisation in small towns.
Within the IGU, E. Denis was notably involved in hosting the Urban Commission at the French Institute of Pondicherry, India, in 2010, when he was head of the social sciences department. He also participated in and led numerous scientific programmes involving IGU members and actively took part in the IGU thematic conference held in Cairo, Egypt, in April 2025. This was an occasion for high-quality scientific and human exchanges.
Through his great personal qualities and commitment to collective research, he significantly contributed to the dynamism of our scientific community. His work remains a major legacy that will continue to inspire and guide geographers interested in urbanisation in the Global South.

Hommage de l’UGI : Directeur de Recherche CNRS, Éric DENIS
C’est avec une grande tristesse que l’Union Géographique Internationale a appris le décès d’Éric DENIS, Directeur de Recherche au CNRS. Éric DENIS a apporté une contribution remarquable à la promotion de la recherche en géographie.
Spécialiste reconnu de l’urbanisation dans des régions comme l’Inde, l’Égypte ou le Soudan et plus largement le Sud global, ses travaux ont révélé les évolutions des structures sociales et spatiales, ainsi que les disparités présentes dans les grandes agglomérations, en s’intéressant notamment à la marchandisation du foncier, et à la conversion des sols pour l’habitat urbain tout en mettant particulièrement en avant la dynamique propre à l’urbanisation subalterne observée dans les petites villes. Au sein de l’UGI, E. Denis s’est impliqué de façon marquante en accueillant la Commission urbaine à l’Institut Français de Pondichéry, en Inde, en 2010, lorsqu’il était responsable du département des sciences sociales. Il a par ailleurs participé et dirigé de nombreux programmes scientifiques associant des membres de l’UGI qu’il a retrouvé en prenant une part active à la conférence thématique de l’UGI organisée au Caire, en Egypte, en Avril 2025. Ce fut l’occasion d’échanges de grande qualité scientifique et humaine.
Par ses grandes qualités humaines et son engagement dans la recherche collective, il a largement contribué au dynamisme de notre communauté scientifique. Son travail reste un héritage majeur qui continuera à inspirer et à guider le travail des géographes qui s’intéressent à l’urbanisation des Suds.
