WELCOME TO IGU UGI JOURNAL DATABASE
WELCOME TO THE NEWLY REVISED AND UPDATED IGU UGI JOURNAL DATABASE
The International Geographical Union (IGU) is pleased to unveil its newly revised and updated world-wide listing of geographical and geography-related journals. This replaces the 2008 version. Its aim is to provide a definitive listing of all journals published by geographical organizations, ranging from departments to national organizations, together with a more tentative listing of journals that can be regarded as “geographically related”. This latter set are defined by four criteria: whether the journal explicitly encourages contributions from geographers; whether the editor or members of the editorial board are geographers; whether the journal routinely publishes articles written by geographers; and whether the journal is cited by other geographical journals. These criteria provide a clearer definition of journals that are geographically-related than in the original listing.
The database includes 1122 journals. Listed for each is the journal name, the country (or countries) in which the journal’s editor(s) are located, the year the journal was founded (or reformed), the print and electronic ISSN numbers for each journal and its website. The database is searchable.
The listing was compiled by researchers at California State University- San Bernardino (USA) and Beijing Normal University (China). Our aim is to maintain a current listing of geography and geography-related periodicals and we invite colleagues to identify any journals they believe should be added to the list, by contacting the Assistant Secretary-General at pankajdsedu@gmail.com.
The listing of a title in this database does not imply, in any way, endorsement of its content by the IGU, The content remains entirely the responsibility of the editors of the journals in question. Users should be cognizant of the problem of so-called ‘predatory’ journals and are directed to Beall’s list of Predatory Journals and Publishers to check the credibility of the entries.
A critical analysis of publication practices in Geography, and their associated challenges, based on the original database, may be found here. A discussion of the creation of the revised database and an analysis of the distribution of geographical journals is forthcoming,
