The IGU Kyoto Regional Conference is underway and registration opened Sunday afternoon 4th August with the opening ceremony scheduled for Monday morning.  Around 1600 delegates have registered to attend, more than half of which come from beyond Japan, in all 69 countries.  The conference, which concludes Friday, has more than 1200 presentations as well as a number of parallel events and exhibitions.  Prince Akishino and his wife are attending the opening ceremony.  Members of the IGU Executive Committee, together with the President of the Science Council of Japan, were hosted Sunday evening to a dinner at a traditional Japanese restaurant by the Japanese Organization of Geographical Sciences.
