Following a request sent by the President of ANPEGE (Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Geografia), the IGU Executive Committee met on 11 and 12 April 2025 and reaffirmed the following:
The IGU affirms the important role of geographers in advancing peace and shared prosperity among all peoples and nations. This commitment is rooted in respect for human dignity and equality, regardless of religion, language, gender, or cultural background, and in the belief that mutual understanding across borders is vital for a stable and just world. In an era marked by funding constraints and global tensions, the IGU remains steadfast in its mission to foster international scientific collaboration. It strongly supports educators and researchers working in regions affected by conflict, where people, institutions, and infrastructure have been profoundly disrupted. Standing in solidarity with these communities is not only a moral imperative but a recognition of the essential role of geography and science in building resilience, recovery, and long-term cooperation.
