The 3rd edition of the International Gorilla Conference on Geographical Science for Resilient Communities, Ecosystems and Livelihoods under Global Environmental Change (GORILLA) was held in Kampala, Uganda, from 4 to 6 December
The conference was organised by the University’s Department of Geography, Geo-Informatics and Climatic Sciences, part of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CEAS). The IGU was one of the official sponsors of this event. The conference was organised by our colleague and former IGU Vice President Prof. Yazidhi Bamutaze, LOC Chair. Professor Rubén C Lois-González, First Vice President of IGU represented Executive Committee in the conference. This is a leading scientific event in the field of Geographical Sciences and is currently held in Africa every two years. The Opening Ceremony was attended by the Minister of Environment of the Government of Uganda and the top
officials of Makerere University. Scientists from 50 countries participated in this conference, with representation from more than 20 countries from Africa. Thematic sessions were held on Geographies of Climate Change, Biodiversity, Green Growth, Water Governance, Interconnected Geo-hazard, Polycrisis: Migration, Displacement, Conflict and Humanitarianism, the Changing Geography of Agrifood Systems, Sustainable Cities, among others. Agenda 2030 was also one of the major topics discussed. A total of more than 300 communications were presented at this conference. The participation of around 200 attendees was recorded throughout the days of the event. This edition reinforces its consolidation and the foundations have been laid for organizing the 4th edition of the Conference in December 2026.
