At the recent General Assembly (virtual) of the International Science Council (ISC), geographer Professor Maria Paradiso was nominated by the IGU and subsequently elected as a member of the ISC Governing Board. Professor Paradiso is a long-standing supporter of the IGU and has worked incredibly hard over many years to promote our aims and objectives. Professor Paradiso was founder and chair of our Commission on the Mediterranean Basin (winner of the Commission Excellence Award in 2016) and is currently chair of the Italian National Committee for the IGU. She is Professor of Economic and Political Geography at the University of Naples Federico II and chair of the Human Mobility, Governance, Environment, Space Section of Academia Europaea (London). Maria brings her considerable experience to the ISC board and will certainly ensure that the role of geographers in helping to fulfil the important tasks that lie before the ISC in the coming three years is properly considered.
