C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous vous faisons part du décès du Professeur Gabriel WACKERMANN.
Géographe émérite français, le Professeur Gabriel Wackermann a marqué durablement la discipline par l’ampleur de son œuvre, la rigueur de sa pensée et la générosité de son engagement intellectuel. Son parcours témoigne d’une fidélité constante à la géographie comme science humaine, attentive aux territoires, aux sociétés et aux dynamiques du monde contemporain.
Son expertise en géographie du tourisme occupe une place centrale dans son héritage scientifique. En effet, la spécialité géographie du tourisme s’est consolidée à partir des années 1970, et le Professeur Gabriel WACKERMANN en fut l’un des instigateurs. À une époque où le tourisme était encore parfois considéré comme un objet secondaire, Gabriel Wackermann a contribué de manière décisive à en démontrer la portée territoriale, économique, sociale, culturelle et géopolitique. Il a multiplié les publications scientifiques dans ce champ de recherche, participé à l’émergence de cours universitaires dédiés et fut un des initiateurs de la Commission du tourisme de l’International Geographical Union (UGI) a laquelle il a longtemps contribué.
Auteur ou directeur de près d’une centaine d’ouvrages, Gabriel Wackermann a largement diffusé ses analyses en France comme à l’international. Ses publications ont nourri la réflexion de chercheurs, d’enseignants, mais aussi de décideurs publics, soucieux de comprendre et d’accompagner le développement touristique dans une perspective durable et respectueuse des territoires et des populations.
Rendre hommage au Professeur Gabriel WACKERMANN, c’est saluer une œuvre scientifique majeure en géographie du tourisme et en géographie humaine, mais aussi une figure intellectuelle dont la rigueur, l’humanisme et la générosité continueront d’inspirer durablement la communauté géographique internationale.

In memory of Professor Gabriel Wackermann (1928–2026)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Gabriel Wackermann.
Emeritus French geographer Prof. Wackermann left a lasting mark on the discipline through the breadth of his work, the rigour of his thinking, and his generous intellectual commitment. His career reflects his unwavering commitment to geography as a human science that pays attention to territories, societies, and the dynamics of the contemporary world.
His expertise in the geography of tourism occupies a central place in his scientific legacy. Indeed, tourism geography as a speciality emerged in the 1970s, and Prof. Wackermann was one of its instigators. At a time when tourism was still sometimes considered a minor subject, he made a decisive contribution to demonstrating its territorial, economic, social, cultural and geopolitical significance. He published numerous scientific articles in this field, contributed to the development of specialised university courses and was one of the founders of the Tourism Commission of the International Geographical Union (IGU), to which he has contributed for many years.
As the author or editor of almost one hundred books, Prof. Wackermann disseminated his analyses widely in France and internationally. His publications have informed researchers, teachers, and public decision-makers seeking to understand and support sustainable tourism development that respects territories and populations.
Tribute to Prof. Gabriel Wackermann is a tribute not only to his significant contributions to the fields of tourism and human geography, but also to his intellectual legacy of rigour, humanism and generosity, which will continue to inspire the international geographical community for years to come.
