Professor Ioan Ianos, Emeritus Professor of the University of Bucharest, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Constanţa (Romania). This highest distinction of the institution was imposed by the Rector of the University, at the request of the Faculties of Science (where the Department of Geography is located), Philology and Mathematics.
Professor Ianos is a representative of one of the most dynamic geographic schools in Eastern Europe, with academic offerings in all major universities and a very notable applied aspect in regional planning. Professor Ianos has participated in and directed several European Union projects and under his direction the regionalization of Romania was carried out, prior to the establishment of the EU Nut2. He has also been Director General of Higher Education at the beginning of this century. He is the author of dozens of books and articles on Geography and territorial planning in Romania.
Professor Ianos is a regular participant in IGU meetings and has organised annual meetings of the Urban Commissions and the CSRS in his country. Professor Ruben Lois, First Vice-President of the IGU, spoke at the ceremony to award him the Honoris Causa. On behalf of the President, Nathalie Lemarchand, he recalled the great historical contribution of Emmanuel De Martonne to the definition of borders and the constitution of modern Romania.
