At its last meeting, the Council of the Academia Europaea (London) confirmed the election Prof. Dr. Benno Werlen, chair of the IGU Commission on Global Understanding and IGU Laureat d’honneur winner, as chairperson of the social science section “Human Mobility, Governance, Environment and Space”. This section is concerned with interdisciplinary and internationally comparative studies of cultural, economic, political, social and spatial aspects. Its members include anthropologists, demographers, geographers, political scientists, sociologists and spatial scientists.

The Academia Europaea, which was founded in 1988, now has over 5,500 renowned members worldwide (including around 400 geographers) from all disciplines of the humanities, law, economics, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics and medicine. It promotes the global dissemination of outstanding scientific achievements by European researchers. The European Commission recently appointed the AE to represent the EU in the G20 Scientific Advisory Network as its “National Academy”. It is to deal with the formulation of priorities for global action and submit them to the G20 Summit for consultation.

Membership of the academy is by invitation and after a rigorous selection process carried out by the steering groups of the sections. Members of the Academia Europaea can propose scientists for election in an annual cycle. The next cycle for the nomination of candidates begins on October 1, 2024 and ends on January 31, 2025.

Benno Werlen serves also the Chair of the IGU Commission on Global Understanding and holds the UNESCO Chair on Global Understanding for Sustainability at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
