Dear IGU Community of Geographers
The current IGU Executive Committee (EC) took office following the virtual General Assembly in August 2020. Since then, the EC has held several online meetings, one of which we devoted to refining an actionable Strategy to guide the IGU through the next four years, during which time we will celebrate our centenary in Paris (2022).
The Strategy document (English, French) reaffirms our commitment to the fundamental purposes of the IGU as set out in our Statutes/Statuts but goes beyond these in establishing a series of actions relating, essentially, to membership and empowerment, outreach, and communication. All EC members have been allocated responsibilities to try to ensure that these actions are indeed carried out to further the aims of the IGU in promoting and developing our discipline globally.
Please feel free to circulate the document to your colleagues and, if there are any comments or suggestions on the IGU Strategy, please do not hesitate to let me know.
I wish you all good health and success for the year ahead. The coronavirus situation remains rampant in many places still but the roll-out of a vaccine and, hopefully, further successful implementation of prevention and control measures, will hopefully enable us to gather in Istanbul in August at our postponed 34th International Geographical Congress. I fervently hope so.
Keep well.
Michael Meadows
