The 33rd IGU Congress opening ceremony, attended by some 5000 geographers from more than 100 countries got underway at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing. The event was introduced by a charming performance of folk music by students of the Beijing College of Music. This was followed by introductory speeches welcoming the world of geography to the congress.
